Dar al-Magana: The 14th-Century Water Clock That Still Puzzles Engineers Today

Most people walk right under it.

On Talaa Kebira which is the main artery of Fes el-Bali, the street where leather merchants, spice sellers, and school children all share the same narrow lane,  there's a row of thirteen wooden beams jutting from a carved facade, about three metres above your head. Nobody stops. Nobody looks up. Which is almost the point.

That facade is Dar al-Magana. The House of the Clock. And what once sat behind those thirteen windows was one of the most sophisticated pieces of engineering in the medieval world: a fully hydraulic clock that chimed the hours across the entire medina — more than 660 years ago.

A Sultan's Commission, An Astronomer's Genius

The story starts in 1357 — and it starts with ambition.

The Marinid sultan Abu Inan Faris commissioned Dar al-Magana as part of the same building campaign that produced the Bou Inania Madrasa directly across the street. The two buildings were conceived as a single complex: a school, a mosque, and a device precise enough to regulate the five daily prayers.

The engineer was Abu al-Hassan Ali ibn Ahmed al-Tlemsani, a mathematician and astronomer from Tlemcen whose speciality was trigonometry and the practical measurement of time. He wasn't a clockmaker by trade. He was a scientist applying every tool available to him, from mathematics, hydraulics to mechanics in order to solve a problem that mattered: how do you tell a whole city what time it is?

The clock was unveiled on May 6, 1357. It was an immediate wonder.

How It Worked — Or How We Think It Worked

Here's the honest answer: nobody knows exactly. That's not a figure of speech.

The mechanism fell silent centuries ago, and despite multiple restoration attempts — most recently by ADER-Fes, the agency responsible for the medina's monuments — no engineer has been able to reconstruct the system. The original builders took their knowledge with them, and nothing in the historical record is precise enough to fill the gap.

What we do know comes from a 14th-century chronicler named al-Jazna'i and from careful study of the facade itself. What al-Tlemsani built was a hydraulic clock with thirteen windows arranged in a row along the facade. Behind each window sat a bronze bowl on a wooden beam. Every hour, a mechanism involving water reservoirs, floats, weighted ropes, and a small cart moving horizontally behind twelve doors would trigger a window to open. A metal ball dropped into the corresponding brass bowl with an audible clang. The entire medina could hear the hours pass.

The mechanics behind that trigger are where it gets extraordinary. The most likely reconstruction involves a small cart driven by a system of weighted ropes: one with a hanging weight, and the other with a float in a water reservoir that gradually emptied. Each hour, the cart triggered a door to open and released a metal ball into a brass bowl.

Think about what that required: a reservoir calibrated to empty at a precise rate. A float that responded to that rate consistently. Ropes, pulleys, and a cart that moved without friction or failure — hour after hour, day after day, year after year. The guide explained that after the original builders had finished the work, nobody knew how to service it. That detail says everything. This wasn't a clock. It was a system, and the system was irreplaceable.

What it was used for: Dar al-Magana is located near the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque, and this proximity suggests the clock was used to regulate prayer times and daily schedules — as well as the rhythms of the Bou Inania Madrasa, the only madrasa in Morocco that also served as a Friday congregational mosque.

What You'll See Today

The facade has been restored. The woodwork is intact — thirteen beams, twelve windows, carved geometric patterns running the full length of the wall. Seven of the original brass bowls still remain on the beams beneath the windows. The others were removed in 2004.

Standing in front of it and looking up at those thirteen windows, knowing what used to open behind each one — is a different experience from reading about it. There's something quietly unsettling about a machine whose instructions have been lost. In the morning, when the light hits the carved wood, the beams throw shadows across the facade that make the thirteen windows look like they might still open.

Getting There from Riad Joy Fes

From Riad Joy Fes: ~10 minutes on foot

Walk through Place Batha and head up Talaa Kebira — the long, upward-sloping street that forms the spine of Fes el-Bali. Dar al-Magana sits roughly two-thirds of the way up on your left, just before the intersection with Talaa Seghira. You'll know you're close when you see the entrance to Bou Inania Madrasa on your right — that's your cue to cross the street and look up.

The walk itself is worth doing slowly. Talaa Kebira passes through some of the most layered streets in Fes — bread ovens at ground level, centuries of architecture above. It's a good introduction to how the medina works before you reach the clock.

If you want to pair it with a longer morning out, the Chouara Tanneries are another 15 minutes further into the medina. You can do both in a single half-day, easily.
